Academic
FAQ
1) I am an SNL student and have been
taking classes on-campus. I would like to
know how an online course works?
Distance Education courses are open to all SNL students. Distance Education courses are offered in the Blackboard course management system. Each course has a threaded discussion conference in which students are required to participate. You can login to the discussion conference any day of the week and at any time of the day. All courses require that you regularly participate in the discussion conference and complete your assignments according to the course schedule.
2) When and how do I register for courses?
The fastest and the most convenient way
to register for courses is though Campus Connect at https://campusconnect.depaul.edu.
You can also download the Registration form
at http://snl.depaul.edu/contents/current/forms/RegistrationForm.doc
and fax it to 312-362-8809 or email it to
snlonline@depaul.edu
Please note that you can register for all
courses on Campus Connect except for Foundations
of Adult Learning, Research Seminar, Advanced
Project, Externship, Guided Independent
Study (GIS) and Faculty Designed Independent
Study (FDIS). All of these courses require
completion of pre-requisites and therefore
require a paper registration form submitted
via fax or email.
3) When I register for an online course,
will I be contacted by my instructor?
Your instructor will contact you via
email, during the first week of class. Your
instructor and the staff at SNL will use the
"Preferred" email address listed on Campus
Connect to contact you. You are required to
make sure you always have the most up to
date email address on Campus Connect. If you
update your email address on Campus Connect
during the middle of a course, it is a good
idea to notify your instructor(s).
4) How do I contact my instructor?
You can contact your instructors via phone
or email. You can find your instructor's
contact information at http://www.snlonline.net/faculty/default.asp.
5) How do I register for a Proficiency
Exam?
Proficiency Exams are available for L4 College
Writing, L5 Critical Thinking, L6 Quantitative
Reasoning, and S5 Information Technology
competencies. Students may only register
once for each exam. If you need to cancel
or register for an alternative date, you
must do so in writing at least 72 hours
prior to the exam without being responsible
for the fee. Students must pass an exam
in the first attempt in order to receive
credit. Failing a proficiency exam requires
completion of an SNL course to satisfy the
competence. Failure to submit the exam on
time also means you have to take the course.
Exception: The S5 exam can be re-taken if
failed but also requires successful completion
of work to develop competence prior to re-taking
the exam.
6) Who do I contact to get my Proficiency
Exam grade?
Results for L4 College Writing and L5 Critical
Thinking are emailed to the student within
4-6 weeks after the exam submission deadline.
L6 Quantitative Reasoning results are emailed
to the student within 1-2 weeks after the
exam completion. The S5 Information Technology
results are emailed to the student within
2 weeks of the exam date.
7) How do I register for an ILP?
You can submit an Independent Learning Pursuit
(ILP) only after you have completed the Foundations
of Adult Learning Course. For more information
on ILP, please refer to your Foundations Study
Guide at http://www.snlonline.net/Foundations/Foundations.pdf.
Please consult with your faculty mentor before
you submit an ILP. Once your ILP has been
approved, it will appear on Campus Connect
and you will be charged a fee for $150. The
ILP Assessment Form can be downloaded from
http://www.snlonline.net/foundations/Resources/IndependentLearningAssessmentForm.doc
For frequently asked questions on ILPs,
please visit http://www.snl.depaul.edu/contents/current/forms/ILP_FAQs.doc
8) When do I transfer my past work and
college experience?
All students do an initial transfer exercise
during the Learning Assessment Seminar.
The official course transfer process takes
place during and after Foundations. Please
refer to your Foundations course study guide
for more information. You can download the
forms required for pre-approved and non-pre-approved
transfer courses at http://www.snlonline.net/mirrorfal/.
9) When will my transfer courses show
up on Campus Connect?
SNL allows you to transfer courses from
other colleges during Foundations of Adult
Learning. Once you complete Transfer Coursework
Assessment Form and Log Sheet, forward it
to your Faculty Mentor for review. If approved,
Form and Log Sheet will be sent to Committee
for the Assessment of Student Competence
(CASC) for review. If accepted, Form and
Log Sheet sent to CASC Coordinator who copies
them to: the Student, Advising Resource
Center (ARC), Faculty Mentor, and student
file. Transfer courses take 4-6 weeks to
show up on Campus Connect course history.
Please contact your Faculty Mentor with
additional questions.
10) When am I assigned an advisor?
Your Foundations instructor will be your
faculty mentor for the program. You can
also contact any academic advisor at
snladvising@depaul.edu.
11) What is an "Incomplete"
grade and how does it work?
Incomplete grades are granted to students
only in exceptional circumstances that occur
after the drop deadline of the course. The
drop deadline for the quarter is generally
in the seventh week of class. If circumstances
prevent the student from completing the
course before the end of the seventh week
of class, the student is required to drop
the course and receive a "W" or
withdrawal grade for the course. If a situation
arises after the drop deadline that prevents
the student from completing some of his
or her assignments, the student is to contact
the instructor immediately to discuss options.
The granting of the incomplete grade is
not automatic and the instructor when making
the decision to grant an incomplete will
consider several factors. If the instructor
approves the incomplete, a contract specifying
what needs to be completed in a time frame
not to exceed one quarter after the quarter
of enrollment is completed. The form can
be downloaded from
http://www.snl.depaul.edu/contents/faculty/incomplete_contract.doc.
A copy of this contract must be submitted
to the SNL CDE office via fax at 312-362-8809
or via email to snlonline@depaul.edu
for file. Incomplete grades that are not
resolved within this time frame will be
automatically converted to a "F"
and may not be re-opened.
12) What paperwork do I need to fill
out in order to graduate?
You will need to fill out the intent to
graduate form a quarter before you register
for the Summit Seminar. The form can be
downloaded from http://snl.depaul.edu/contents/current/forms/ba_intent.doc.
The deadlines for submitting the form can
be found at http://www.snl.depaul.edu/current/calendar.asp.
13) What is the Academic Integrity Policy?
Please visit https://robin.depaul.edu/aib/AIfaculty.html for details about the rights and responsibilities of faculty members, students, and those who adjudicate violations.
